About Wonderlit
The right book for right now.
Books change how kids see the world. We help you find the right ones.
The best book recommendation you’ll ever get comes from a great children’s librarian who knows your kid. Someone who remembers that your daughter is nervous about the new baby, that your son just discovered he loves space, that your family is navigating something hard and needs a story that meets you where you are.
That conversation doesn’t scale. Wonderlit is our attempt to build something that does.
We’re a children’s book discovery platform built for the adults doing the choosing: parents, teachers, grandparents, and caregivers. We organize books not just by age or genre, but by the moments and milestones that make you reach for a book in the first place.
What drives us
Literacy starts with the right book at the right time. A child who sees themselves in a story becomes a child who wants to read another one. Finding that book shouldn’t require a degree in children’s literature or hours of scrolling through generic recommendations.
Parents search by situation, not by genre. Nobody types “fiction, ages 4–7” into a search bar. They type “my kid is scared of the dark” or “books about having a new sibling.” Wonderlit is built around how families actually look for books.
Teachers are the front line of literacy. The educators recommending books to 25 families at a time deserve tools built for them, not adapted from a consumer product as an afterthought. When a teacher’s recommendation puts a book in a child’s hands, everyone wins.
Independent bookstores matter. Our primary affiliate partner is Bookshop.org because we believe the places where families discover books in person deserve to thrive alongside the platforms where they discover them online.
For parents and families
You’re here because something is happening in your family’s life and you think a book might help. Maybe your child is starting kindergarten, processing a loss, or just obsessed with dinosaurs and you’ve run out of titles.
Wonderlit lets you search by what’s going on. Type a situation in your own words, and we’ll match you with books tagged across life moments, emotional themes, interests, and age ranges. Every book has a parent-focused summary, content advisories (gentle heads-ups, not warning labels), and discussion prompts to help you talk about what you’ve read together.
You can track what your family is reading, save books for later, leave reviews that help other parents, and build reading lists organized however makes sense for your household.
For teachers and educators
Wonderlit gives you a dedicated set of tools designed for the way you work. Build and share reading lists organized by theme, life moment, or curriculum unit. Your lists are shareable with parents and colleagues, with full context for why each book matters.
When families purchase books through your lists, you earn affiliate credits through Bookshop.org that go directly toward classroom book purchases. It’s a simple model: your recommendations become books on your shelves. No fundraising, no out-of-pocket spending. Just your expertise, working for your students.
Whether you’re a classroom teacher building a library, a reading specialist matching books to needs, or a school librarian developing a collection, Wonderlit is built to make your work easier and more visible.
How we organize books
Every book in our database is tagged across multiple dimensions at once: age range, life moments, emotional themes, topics and interests, format, and content advisories. A single picture book might be tagged for ages 4–7, the life moments “new sibling” and “jealousy,” the themes of family love and resilience, and the interest tag “humor.”
This means you can find it by searching for any of those angles. And when you land on a book, you can see exactly why it might be right for your family, right now.
What we promise
Your family’s privacy comes first. We use privacy-respecting analytics with no tracking cookies. Child profiles are parent-controlled, store minimal information, and are never shared. We don’t run behavioral advertising.
We feature great books, period. Bestsellers and hidden gems. Diverse voices and classic authors. Books that tackle hard things and books that are just pure fun. We don’t promote books based on publisher relationships or paid placement.
We’re honest about content. Our content advisories are “heads up, parents,” not “stay away.” A book about grief isn’t a problem. It might be exactly what your family needs. But you should know what’s in there before bedtime.
