Dav Pilkey's Dog Man is a cop with the head of a dog and the body of a human, and the fact that this is treated with complete seriousness is part of the joke. The series teaches reading through the back door: kids who pick it up because it's funny discover they're reading 240-page books voluntarily. Twelve books and counting, plus the Cat Kid Comic Club spinoff, which goes even further by making the reader aware of the creative process itself.
